At certain times of the year, Houston is inundated with allergens, especially cedar allergens that can travel far and wide quickly. Here are some common allergens you may encounter in Houston, Texas and the symptoms they cause.

Pollen

One of the most common allergies nationwide, pollen affects millions of Americans. Commonly found in grasses, weeds, and trees, it is easily spread by wind. Pollen can cause hay fever, irritate sinuses, eyes, and skin.

Oak

Oak is a common allergen in the Houston area predominantly present during spring. Oak can cause sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, coughs and runny noses.

Juniper

Like oak, juniper causes problems in the spring, often resulting in sneezing, watery nasal discharge, and congestion.

Birch

Birch allergens can cause cold and flu-like symptoms but without fever. Birch allergens can cause eye and nasal allergy symptoms.

Annual Ragweed

Ragweed allergens typically arise in the summer and fall. General symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge, coughing and watery eyes.

Box Elder

A common maple tree species, box elder has the highest levels of allergenicity among tree pollens. It can cause a wide range of symptoms including:

Asthma

Sneezing

Runny Nose

Rash

Itchiness

Cedar

Texas is known for having the most cedar pollen in the U.S. Cedar pollen is present in winter and spring and easily travels far and wide, making it a pesky allergen problem.
