Loud or unpredictable snoring could be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea

Snoring has adverse effects, but we have ways to treat them

Obstructive sleep apnea is the interruption of our breathing as we sleep

Our sleep cycle includes a series of important phases that culminate in the rapid-eye-movement phase, or “REM sleep,” the most restorative part of sleep.

Losing REM sleep due to interrupted breathing can prevent the brain from completing its important processing tasks. Sleep apnea can further compound sleep disruption by leading to bouts of insomnia at night and naps during the day, and subsequent fatigue, irritability, and depression.
