AllergyAllergy Treatment

When it comes to understanding your seasonal allergies, there’s a lot of misinformation out there. At Allergy & ENT Associates, we’re here to help you make sense of your symptoms. Here’s a simple FAQ to get you clear on congestion.

Q: Does hot weather make allergies worse?

A: Fact! High temperatures can exacerbate allergies. When it’s hot, plants release more pollen, and longer growing seasons mean more of it in the air. Additionally, heatwaves can increase air pollution, which can further irritate your respiratory system and make allergy symptoms worse.

Q: Is it true that pollen is more potent in the heat?

A: Fact! Heat can actually make pollen more potent. Studies show that warmer temperatures can cause pollen grains to become more concentrated with allergens, making them more likely to trigger reactions. This means that even if pollen counts stay the same, allergy sufferers may still experience stronger symptoms during a heatwave.

Q: Do higher temperatures lead to more mold growth?

A: Fact! Hot, humid weather creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive. Mold spores, much like pollen, can become airborne and trigger allergic reactions, especially in damp indoor spaces or after summer storms. If you notice worsening allergies indoors, mold could be the culprit.

Q: Will drinking more water reduce my allergy symptoms in hot weather?

A: Fiction! While staying hydrated is always beneficial for your overall health, drinking extra water won’t directly reduce allergy symptoms. However, dehydration can make symptoms like congestion and dry eyes feel worse, so it’s still important to drink plenty of fluids.

Q: Can a temperature drop eliminate pollen allergies?

A: Fiction! A sudden drop in temperature might temporarily reduce the amount of pollen in the air, but it won’t eliminate pollen allergies altogether. Many allergy triggers, including mold spores and lingering pollen, can persist even after a cold front moves in.

Q: Does staying indoors during high pollen hours actually work?

A: Fact! Pollen counts tend to be highest in the early morning and late evening. Staying indoors during these peak times can significantly reduce your exposure. Using air purifiers, keeping windows closed and showering after outdoor activities can also help minimize symptoms.

Q: Can wearing sunglasses and hats really help with allergies?

A: Fact! Wearing sunglasses and a hat with a brim can protect your eyes and hair from pollen when you’re outside. This simple step can prevent pollen from sticking to your hair and getting into your eyes, helping to reduce sneezing and itchy, watery eyes.

Q: Should I see a doctor if my allergies get worse in the heat?

A: Fact! If your allergy symptoms are out of control despite your best efforts, it’s a good idea to see a specialist. At Allergy & ENT Associates, our board-certified allergists make personalized treatment plans to help you manage your allergies and enjoy the summer months with fewer symptoms.
