What Is Mohs Micrographic Surgery for Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a serious concern for millions of people around the world. It’s a condition that significantly impacts people’s lives, even when you catch it early. However, proper treatment can lead to recovery and minimal risks for skin cancer patients. One excellent treatment for skin cancer is the Mohs Micrographic surgery, which we’ll talk about here.

Removing One Layer at a Time

The surgery works by targeting the top layer of tissue on any spot with visible cancer. The surgeon will carefully remove the top layer over the infectious area, removing as many cancerous cells as possible and leaving the healthy skin intact.

Checking for Cancer

When the surgeon extracts the skin layer, the surgeon should take it and test it in a lab. This is to best identify the cancerous cells in the body and if the surgery removed the cancer. This means the patient waits in the operating room until someone tells them the operation is over.

Repeating Until Clear

One crucial part of Mohs Micrographic Surgery is that it continues on and on until the cancer is clear from the visible spot. The surgeon will remove just one layer and test it before removing the next, which helps remove all of the cancer along with additional benefits.

The Benefits of Mohs Surgery

Mohs micrographic surgery isn’t the only option for people with skin cancer but it offers many benefits. This surgery helps preserve as much healthy tissue as possible and is effective at eliminating possibly reoccurring skin cancer. Even with this care, it’s still possible for the skin to look bad, which is why many people use plastic surgery in Houston and other places to help cover up scarring after the surgery.

The Mohs surgery is a serious boon to many people with skin cancer and can be exactly what they need to deal with their condition. However, you should always talk to a doctor or medical professional before making a decision like this.
